What is Broadband?
Broadband is a permanent high speed digital connection that uses your standard BT line. As it is always on you don't need to dial up to your service provider each time you want to access the Internet. With a standard package you can expect speeds 10 times faster than a normal dial up, and you can make and receive calls at the same time.

What can I do with it?

Whatever you use the Internet for now - but much faster. With the improved speed there are many other things that would have been impossible with a dialup connection:

• Download movie trailers
• Watch streaming (real time) video
• Download the latest Windows upgrade!

You will need the following equipment:

• BT Telephone line within 3.5 to 5.5km of the Blunham exchange (near the post office)
• A Microfilter. This is a little gadget for about £8 which plugs into your phone socket and keeps the voice and data 'feeds' separate. You will need one of these for each BT point.
• An ADSL modem or router. These are usually one of three types:
  • PCI internal modem. Plugs into a spare PCI slot within your PC. Costs around £35.
  • USN external modem. Plug into a USB port. Simple to install, costs about £50.
  • Ethernet/Wireless router. These combine the functions of a modem with a network hub to allow multiple users to access the internet at once. Most of these also include firewall and other security functions. Expect to pay from £50 for an Ethernet one and £70+ for wireless setups. Each of your PC's will need to connect to this network - add about £10 for each Ethernet card and about £20..£40 for a wireless card.
